HENDERSON — The Freed-Hardeman University Lions hosted NCAA DII member Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University on Tuesday night. A match full of drama ended with an 89th minute strike by the visitors, with the Lions falling to the Trojans 4-3.
It was a tale of two halves. The first half featured eight shots. The second half more than doubled that total. Martin Thiessen got the Lions (6-3-3) on the board after
Sam Sebagabo found him at 27:45 to bury the only goal of the opening 45 minutes.
Completely changing the type of game, Trevecca (7-1-2) came out on the attack strong in the second, scoring the equalize at 48:39. 10 minutes later, TNU's Chris Douglas scored the first of his match's three goals at 58:56 to take the lead. In a bout of whiplash, FHU found themselves trailing by one to leading by one in the span of a minute. At 59:40,
Henry Appiah scored an unassisted goal before finding
Evans Osei Amankwah with a cross less than a minute later. Osei Amankwah fired it into the net for his season's first goal to put FHU on top 3-2. At 67:23, a Trojan free kick opened an opportunity for a goal to level the scores. Trevecca then took advantage of a misplayed pass, driving down the pitch before scoring the winning goal at 88:53. Freed-Hardeman quickly put up two shots and hoped they had earned a corner kick opportunity, but it was determined that time had run out on the Lions in the 4-3 loss.
The Lions put up 15 shots to Trevecca's 11, while
Gaspar Bourdon made five saves.
