Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. - Playing in overtime games is getting to be a regular occurrence for the Freed-Hardeman Lion basketball team.
Playing in their third consecutive overtime game, the No. 18 Lions survived 25 turnovers by shooting 65.0 percent for the game to hold off No. 23 Life (Ga.) University, 107-103, in the Union University Thanksgiving Classic.
It was the fourth win this season against a preseason top 25 team for Freed-Hardeman, which improves to 7-1. The Lions also have wins over No. 20 Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.), No. 21 Tougaloo (Miss.) and No. 13 Lee (Tenn.).
Freed-Hardeman led for the majority of tonight's game, but it was never a comfortable lead thanks to Life's swarming pressure defense. It became a very tight game inside six minutes to play after Life scored five quick points to tie the game at 82-82. From there until the end of regulation, neither team led by more than two points.
As they did at Lee, the Lions had a chance to win in regulation with the score tied at 89-89 but
Ken Bingham's shot in traffic in the lane wouldn't fall and no one could corral the rebound before time expired.
The Running Eagles took an early lead in overtime, going ahead 93-91 on a Greg Brown 3-pointer, but Freed-Hardeman went on an 8-0 run to take a six point lead with 1:05 left. Life, though, hit 3-pointers on their next two possessions to get back within two points, then cut the FHU lead down to one point (102-101) with 21 seconds left after a Tay Barber layup.
But
Zack Frey followed by making both ends of a double bonus and - after another basket by Barber brought the lead to one point -
Jesse Moulton got behind the Life press, taking a long pass from
Kirtiss Brown and laying it in to keep FHU's edge at three points.
Life had one last shot at a tie, but Barber's 3-point attempt was off the mark and rebounded by
Kyle Teichmann, who made the first of two free throws with four seconds left to put the game out of reach.
Bingham and Frey each scored 27 points to pace FHU's offense. Frey was 10-of-12 from the field while Bingham was clutch at the free throw line, making 11-of-12 attempts. Moulton added 12 points and Teichmann again scored double digits off the bench, finishing tonight's contest with 13 points to go along with eight rebounds.
Bingham and
Logan Greer each grabbed nine rebounds for FHU, which outrebounded Life 45-32. Brown tied a career high with 10 assists.
The Lions finish up the classic tomorrow at 2:00 PM against No. 5 McKendree (Ill.) College.
