Box Score 2 HENDERSON, Tenn. - After using the long ball to win their first two games, the Freed-Hardeman Lions instead relied on pitching to win their home opener on a chilly Thursday afternoon at Carnes Field.
Alan Barnett and
Javier Gomez combined to hold the Lambuth (
Tenn.) Eagles scoreless over the last five innings and preserve FHU's two-run lead as the Lions took a 6-4 win to improve to 3-0 on the young season. Lambuth falls to 5-4.
All of the game's scoring came in the first four innings. FHU's
Greg Allen opened the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second, advanced to third after an errant throw on a pickoff attempt, and scored on
Willy Hernandez's sacrifice fly.
Lambuth tied the game in the top of the second and again in the top of the third on Mike Davis's two-run homerun off of FHU starter
Les Rodriguez. The Eagles took their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth on a Mitch Thomas single with no outs, but
Joey Gildea (1-0) struck out two of the next three hitters to escape the inning.
FHU responded with what turned out to be the decisive three runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Hernandez and
Brian Bullard with a sacrifice fly by Allen sandwiched in-between.
Barnett followed with a scoreless fifth and Gomez held the door closed over the final four innings to pick up the save. Lambuth threatened in the top of the ninth with runners on second and third and one out, but Gomez wiggled out of the jam by getting the next batter to ground out to third and then struck out the final batter of the game.
Allen, Bullard, and
Noslen Labrada all had two hits for the Lions. Allen and Hernandez each had a pair of RBI.
FHU prepares to open a four-game series with Lindenwood (Mo.) on Friday with a double-header at 1:00 PM.
