Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - Leo Alvarez and
Willy Hernandez homered in both ends of a double-header as the Freed-Hardeman Lions opened a three-game series with Crichton (
Tenn.) College with 11-1 and 5-3 wins.
Alvarez hit his fifth homerun of the year, a three-run blast, in the bottom of the sixth as part of a four-run inning that closed out the run-rule victory.
The Lions jumped out to a quick lead with three runs in the first on an RBI single by
Brian Bullard followed by a two-run single off the bat of
Derek Bush. Those runs would be plenty for
Jorge Lorie (7-1), who went the distance allowing only three hits over six innings while striking out eight.
FHU added two more in the third after
Blake Taylor, pinch running for Alvarez who doubled with one out, stole third and then came home on a passed ball. Bullard added to the damage later in the inning with an RBI groundout that followed a Hernandez triple. The Lions also got a pair of runs in the fourth before closing out the game in the sixth on Bullard's RBI double.
Alvarez, Bush, and Bullard each had two hits in the first game with Alvarez and Bullard driving in three runs apiece.
The Lions got on the board first in game two on a two-out single in the second by
Angel Nicolas. Hernandez then hit a solo homerun (11) in the bottom of the third to give FHU a 2-0 lead.
Crichton got its first two runners on base in the fourth thanks to back-to-back singles, but managed only one run in the inning off of FHU starter
Carlos Pertuz (6-2). Freed-Hardeman then expanded its lead with three runs in the sixth on RBI hits by Hernandez and Bullard and a run-scoring groundout by
Zach Burns to take a 5-1 lead into the final inning.
The Comets, however, were able to chase Pertuz after Cory Chance's two-run single cut the FHU lead to 5-3. Crichton later moved the tying run to second base before
Joey Gildea got Blake Embrey to fly out to center to end the game and earn his third save of the season.
Hernandez led the Lions at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 in game two with two RBIs.
FHU improves to 26-13 on the season while Crichton drops to 20-20. The series concludes with a nine-inning game on Saturday at Carnes Field.
