Lions set to begin conference tournament

Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lions hope their hot streak continues as play begins in the TranSouth Conference tournament today at Union (Tenn.) University's Fesmire Field.

FHU, the No. 3 seed in the six-team bracket, closed out its regular season by winning 10 of its last 11 games, including taking two of three games from regular season conference champion Cumberland (Tenn.) University. Over that stretch, the Lions have averaged an impressive 10.8 runs per game.

Freed-Hardeman is enjoying its biggest power-hitting season in several years. The Lions have hit a total of 60 home runs - including 25 in their last 11 games - and have a team slugging percentage of .581 on the strength of 179 extra-base hits. They lead the conference in batting average (.347), slugging percentage, and home runs and are second in several other offensive categories.

Individually, senior catcher Leo Alvarez is perhaps swinging the hottest bat in the conference. Alvarez is hitting .509 in the month of April with nine home runs and carries a 14 game hitting streak into the tournament. He became the first player in program history to hit two home runs in the same inning of a game twice in season, doing it against Cumberland on Apr. 25 and again three days later against Rust (Miss.) College. Alvarez leads the conference in batting average, hitting at a .446 clip.

The Lions open play today at 3:30 against fourth-seeded Lyon (Ark.) College in the double-elimination tournament. The Scots took two out of three games from FHU earlier this season. Live stats are available by clicking here.
