HENDERSON, Tenn. - The
Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lion soccer team got its 2009 season off to a
strong start with a dominating 5-0 win over visiting Atlanta Christian College
on Thursday evening at the Josh Riley Soccer Complex.
Freshman
Whitney Newby made quite a debut, scoring two goals and assisting on another in her first collegiate game. She set up classmate
Shelby Murray in the ninth minute as Murray found the back of the net to start the scoring for the Lady Lions.
FHU (1-0) scored twice more in the first half with
Helena Yegros kicking in a rebound in the 26th minute and Newby scoring the first of her two goals in the 41st minute by sailing a shot over the head of ACC keeper Amber Brenton.
The Lady Lions added two more goals in the second half.
Nikki Ceeney punched in a rebound in the 60th minute, followed by Newby's second goal of the night in the 72nd minute that was set up by a
Julie Bracknell assist.
Freed-Hardeman controlled the ball for the majority of the match, taking a total 47 shots in the contest while at the same time keeping the Lady Chargers from taking a single shot.
FHU is back in action tomorrow night as it hosts Brewton-Parker (Ga.) College at 5:00 PM.
