Box Score SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions looked like they might be poised to pull an upset on the second day of pool play at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship, but saw an eight-point lead dwindle away in the fourth set as FHU fell to No. 9 Biola (Calif.) University, 3-1.
The loss ends Freed-Hardeman's chances of advancing into bracket play on Friday as FHU now stands at 0-2 in Pool D. Biola and fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle (Fla.), who defeated the Lady Lions on Tuesday, both stand at 2-0 and should advance out of the pool into the single elimination portion of the event.
FHU (28-10) struggled in the first two sets, dropping both by the scores of 25-21 and 25-17. The Lady Lions had an attack percentage under .100 in both sets.
However, things began to click late in the third set. Trailing 20-18, Freed-Hardeman rolled off five straight points and held on for a 25-23 win on a kill by
Fernanda Ferreira at set point.
Things kept going FHU's way in the fourth set as the Lady Lions built a 19-11 lead and looked poised to force a fifth set with momentum on their side.
But Biola righted the ship with a four-point run and a six-point run, the second of which tied the set at 23-23. The two teams played side-out volleyball for the next eight points, putting FHU at set point on four occasions. Each time, Biola had an answer with a kill.
After a ball-handling error had Freed-Hardeman at set point with a 27-26 lead, the Eagles rolled off three straight points to finish off the match, the final two coming on kills by Nicolette Mather, who notched four of her seven kills during extra points.
Ferreira led the attack for FHU with a match-high 15 kills to go along with eight total blocks.
Nataly Gutierrez added 11 kills and four blocks while
