Box Score 2 HENDERSON, Tenn. - Visiting Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College scored two runs in the top of the 11th, spoiling Freed-Hardeman's home opener with a 9-7 win over the Lions on Saturday afternoon at Carnes Field.
The way it happened was a bit unconventional.
With runners at second and third, the Wildcats attempted a suicide squeeze but missed getting down the bunt and the runner at third got caught in a rundown. However, third baseman
Kyle Dearing threw the ball away, allowing both runners to score what turned out to be the deciding runs.
Gage Franklin (0-1) pitched out of the jam by striking out the final two batters of the inning, and FHU's
Kirkland Wheeler and
Dustin Speight drew walks to start the bottom of the inning. After
Jake Francis sacrificed the runners to second and third, CSC pitcher Sabeian Duplessis got
Kyle Day to ground out to second and struck out
Joe Mike to end the game and earn the save.
The Lions sent the game into extra innings with three runs in the eighth thanks to an RBI double by Dearing and a two-run single by
Tyler Wilson. In the bottom of the 10th, FHU had a chance to win with runners on first and second with one out, but
Robert Prieto grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Freed-Hardeman scored first for the second straight game, getting two runs in the bottom of the first on a bases-loaded walk by Francis and an RBI single by Day. But CSC got one back in the second and took the lead with four runs in the third. The Wildcats extended their lead to 7-2 in the sixth on a two-run home run by Brown, but Dearing's two-run triple in the bottom of the inning kept FHU close.
Justin Stout worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, and the Lions then tied the game with three runs.
FHU takes on Culver-Stockton tomorrow at 11:00 AM and follows with a 1:30 PM game against Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) College.
