Box Score 2 BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Freed-Hardeman Lions pounded out a season-high 20 hits while using a seven-run second inning to build enough of a cushion to hold off a late rally by the Lyon (Ark.) Scots, picking up a 13-9 win on Friday afternoon.
The host Scots got two in the bottom of the first inning off of Lion starter
Hunter Newby (2-3) but FHU responded with seven in its next time at the plate, all coming with two outs.
Joel Pierce drew a bases-loaded walk to get the rally started, followed by a two-run single from
Robert Prieto and a two-run double from
Kyle Dearing.
Leamond Arthur and
Evan Mansell also had RBI hits in the inning as the Lions sent 12 batters to the plate. Mansell and
Kirkland Wheeler both had two hits in the inning.
FHU kept adding to its lead with another RBI from Dearing in the third and three more runs in the fourth highlighted by
Joe Mike's two-run double. Another run in the fifth gave the Lions a 12-2 lead.
Lyon finally got to Newby again in the sixth with four runs, including a two-run home run by Aaron Thornton. The Scots picked up two more in the eighth chasing Newby in the process.
Mansell's fourth hit of the game in the ninth drove in Dearing to give FHU a 13-8 lead but the Scots threatened in the bottom of the inning thanks in part to a pair of errors by FHU. Michael Armenteros singled in a run with two outs but
Drew Suttles was able to shut the door and strand two runners to preserve the win for the Lions.
The win was the third straight for FHU (8-11, 1-3) and first of the season in conference.
Dearing and Mansell each had four hits while Wheeler had three. Prieto, Arthur and Pierce all had two has all nine spots in the Lion order recorded at least one hit.
