MCKENZIE, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion soccer team battled but ultimately saw its season come to a close with a 2-0 loss to Bethel (Tenn.) University in the semifinals of the TranSouth Conference Championships on Thursday afternoon.
Bethel scored both of its goals early in the first half, one by Ariel Morris in the ninth minute and the other by Tori Barraco in the 24th minute.
FHU had an excellent chance early when Christiana Aponte lofted a ball through the Bethel defense to Briley Collins, who had a one-on-one with keeper Cala Avila. However, Avila came up off her line and made a deflection wide of the goal.
Collins also narrowly missed a chance moments later after taking a pass from Shelby Murray just outside the box. Her shot sailed just a foot high of the crossbar.
FHU looked to get within a goal in second half midway thru second half Whitney Newby played a thru ball to Alex Colunga who got behind back line and when one-on-one to goal. Avila came out and smothered the chance by Colunga who tried to dribble around her.
Late in the match, Newby took a 20 yard shot that was well struck and Avila made another great diving save. FHU also had several chances late off of corners but all bounced away.
The Lady Lions' season ends with a record of 4-11-2. It was the final match in the careers of seniors Newby, Colunga, Collins, Murray, Alyssa Resmini and Rachel Conley.
