Box Score 2 HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lions got complete games from
Roberto Ferguson and
Hunter Newby, finishing off a three-game sweep of Blue Mountain (Miss.) College on Saturday, 3-2 and 9-2, and vaulting to first place in the TranSouth Conference standings in the process.
Robert Prieto hit a walk-off home run in game one to give FHU (21-9, 7-2) the win, and the Lions jumped on top early in the finale after scoring seven runs in the first three innings.
The Toppers got two runs off of Ferguson (3-0) in the top of the first inning, but Ferguson shut them down the rest of the game. He only ran into trouble in the top of the seventh with runners on the corners and one out, but he escaped by getting Ben Wallis to ground into a double play.
FHU tied the game in the second inning on a
Jake Todd single that scored
Kirkland Wheeler and an error on the play by BMC right fielder Gardner Richey that allowed
Joe Mike to score on the play as well.
The score stayed knotted at 2-2 until Prieto's game-winning home run, his first of the season.
The final game wasn't nearly as dramatic as the Lions jumped on top early thanks to a five-run second inning. Oddly, FHU only had one hit in the inning - a two-run double by
Kyle Dearing - but had five other batters reach base.
Wheeler added solo home runs in the third and fifth innings, putting his season total at five.
Newby (2-3) went the distance allowing seven hits and no walks over seven innings of work.
The Lions travel to No. 3 Lee (Tenn.) University for nine-inning games on March 19 (6:00 PM) and 20 (4:00 PM).
