Box Score PARKVILLE, Mo. - Chris Hatfield posted his best outing of the season on the mound as the Freed-Hardeman Lions completed a three-game weekend sweep of Park (Mo.) University with a 7-3 win over the Pirates on Saturday.
Hatfield (3-2) allowed one run over seven innings, scattering nine hits while striking out a season-high six batters.
Freed-Hardeman (22-9, 12-2) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth on a two-out single by freshman Jordan Woelfle with the bases loaded, although Cole Veazey was caught in a rundown after trying to score from second. The Lions plated two more in the fifth, with both Kyle Dearing and Robert Prieto scoring on wild pitches, to take a 3-0 lead.
Two more runs in the top of the seventh made it a 5-0 lead on an RBI single by Prieto and a sacrifice fly by Bobby Seda.
Park pushed its first run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh after three straight one-out singles to end Hatfield's shutout bid. He retired the next two batters, however, and stranded two finishing off his day with his sixth strikeout. He also worked out of a jam in the sixth after allowing four hits but left the bases loaded.
The Lions added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth on a two-run single by Storm Bates.
Joe Creasy worked the final two innings, allowing two in the ninth after a pair of hits to open the inning.
The top of the order was productive for FHU which got eight of its 12 hits from the top four hitters. Prieto went a perfect 4-for-4 while Veazey and Dearing each had two hits. Veazey also drew two walks, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances.
The weekend sweep moves the Lions into sole possession of first place in the American Midwest Conference, holding a 1.5 game lead over Missouri Baptist.
FHU returns to action at Carnes Field on Monday with a non-conference double-header against Oakwood (Ala.) College at 3:00 PM followed by a conference date with Mid-Continent (Ky.) University on Tuesday at 5:00 PM.
