Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Three weeks ago, Lyon (Ark.) College came to Henderson and swept a three-game series from the Freed-Hardeman Lions.
But when both teams' seasons were on the line, the Lions came away with a win.
Nolan Huber was brilliant in his first career start while the FHU offense scored double-digits for the second straight game, adding up to a 12-1 win to keep the Lions alive in the American Midwest Conference tournament.
Huber, who had worked 19 games in relief entering the day, limited the Scots to four hits over seven innings. The only run he allowed came in the fourth, and by then the Lions were already in control.
FHU (32-21) got on the board quickly, scoring twice in the first after Kyle Dearing and Lincoln Lakoff reached base to lead off the inning. Dearing scored on an error and Lakoff crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Cole Veazey.
The Lions added four more in the third to take a 6-0 lead thanks to a two-run single by Veazey and an RBI single by Zach Quillian.
Both teams scored a run in the fourth, and FHU continued to pad its lead in the fifth with five runs. Quillian blasted a two-run home run on the first pitch of the game from Lyon reliever Justin Braswell to make it 9-1, and Robert Prieto later followed with a two-out, bases-clearing double.
Dearing went 3-for-4 with four runs scored while Quillian also went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Prieto went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Lakoff with 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
FHU advances to face either Park (Mo.) or Benedictine-Springfield (Ill.) tonight at 7:00 PM.
