Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - After two-plus weeks of preseason training, it's now time for the Freed-Hardeman soccer teams to put that work to use.
FHU opens the 2014 season on the road facing Point (Ga.) University with the women's match scheduled for a 5:00 PM CDT kickoff, followed by the men at 7:15 PM.
Due to injuries and late arrivals, both teams will be a little thin on depth. Whether or not that plays a factor on this early Georgia swing remains to be seen.
The Lady Lions hosted the Skyhawks last year in their home opener and lost, 3-0. Point returns nine starters from that team, including Nery Martinez who accounted for one goal and an assist in last year's match between the teams.
Point's women already have two exhibitions under their belts - a 2-1 loss to Middle Georgia State and a 4-0 win in an alumni match.
The Lady Lions return six starters from last season including their top three goal scorers in center midfielder Taylor Jenkins (nine goals), forward Julianne Renner (six goals) and defender Kennedi Van Ravestein (five goals). The additions of midfielders Taylor Woods and Brett Kletke should help improve the team's play in the midfield. FHU also hopes that forward Sydney Dubiel will be able to play after suffering an injury early in preseason training.
The men's contest is also a rematch of an early-season game last year, won by FHU 3-2. The Lions took a 3-0 lead in that match in the 53rd minute, but Point's Frederico DeAramburu scored goals in the 66th and 67th minutes to make things a lot tighter. The Skyhawks return all 11 players who started that match.
The Lions, meanwhile, will look for offense to replace the loss of last year's top two goal-scorers. FHU does, however, return three starters in both its midfield and its defense from a team that allowed an average of 1.2 goals per match last season.
The Skyhawks have won a pair of exhibition matches, a 9-0 decision in the alumni match and a 4-0 win over Oxford College of Emory University.

LADY LION TO WATCH: Taylor Woods (MF; Fr.; Oakbank, Manitoba, Canada)
Woods has shown the potential to be a major impact player for the Lady Lions, and will be starting in the center midfield tonight alongside sophomore Taylor Jenkins. The two of them will set the tone for FHU in the middle of the field. Woods is very skilled with both feet and can make things happen quickly.
LION TO WATCH: Tristan Quadrini (FWD; Soph.; Spring Hill, Tenn.)
Last year, Quadrini was one of the Lions' first substitutes at forward. This year, he will begin the season in a starting role. The Lions need to generate offense and Quadrini has the opportunity show himself as someone who can help do just that. He has good speed and with a year of college experience under his belt, he could take a step forward in 2014.
