SETTING THE STAGE
The Lions split a four-game series with the University of Northwestern Ohio over the weekend. FHU was solid offensively but had some struggles on the mound and in the field. They'll look to improve on that today against former TranSouth Conference rival Union, now a member of NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference. The Bulldogs are looking for their first win of the season under new head coach Lee Driggers.
GOING YARD
Three Lions hit their first career home runs at FHU on Friday. Peyton Meeker did it first with a solo shot in the third inning of Friday's opener for his first college hit. Chase Young followed with a solo blast in the sixth and Argenis Salazar sent a three-run home run over the left-center field wall in the nightcap.
OFF AND RUNNING
Last year, Freed-Hardeman was among the national leaders in stolen bases and if the first five games are any indication, that will be the case again this year. The Lions rank first in the NAIA in stolen base attempts per game with 5.0 and fifth in steals per game with 3.8. Houston Looser leads the team with six steals in seven attempts. The Lions have been cut down on six attempts thus far.
NEWCOMERS LEADING THE OFFENSE
The trio of Chase Young, Argenis Salazar and Zac Carter have all been swinging hot bats to open the year. The transfers have accounted for 21 hits among them. Salazar leads the team in RBIs with six while hitting .462; Carter (.444) and Young (.438) are close behind in batting average, and all three have OBPs well above .500.
GUSKE BACK ON THE MOUND
Sophomore Brandon Guske is the scheduled starter today, entering the game with a 2-0 record - one win as a starter and one in relief. In his last start, he went six innings allowing one run while fanning six.
