SETTING THE STAGE
FHU opened the 2015 season with a win, and hosts the University of Northwestern Ohio in a four-game weekend series. The Racers (1-3), who are receiving votes in the NAIA preseason poll, dropped three of four games to South Carolina-Beaufort.
SEASON-OPENING WIN
The Lions led NCAA Division II Christian Brothers (Tenn.), 9-1, after six innings, then fended off a late Buccaneer rally to open the year with a 10-6 win on Tuesday. FHU had 14 hits and swiped six bases in the win. Argenis Salazar made his FHU debut with hits in his first three at-bats as the Lions had six players with multi-hit games.
GUSKE GREAT IN FIRST CAREER START
Sophomore Brandon Guske worked exclusively as a reliever last season, but made his first career start on Tuesday and was brilliant. He allowed one run on three hits over six innings, striking out six while issuing no walks. After allowing a run in the first, he completely shut CBU down over the next five retiring 15 of the next 17 hitters.
OFF AND RUNNING
Last year, FHU was among the top teams in the NAIA in stolen bases. This year, the Lions are already showing they intend to be there again. FHU swiped six bases in Tuesday's win over Christian Brothers, including three steals by Houston Looser.
ROTATION NEWCOMERS
Of the three starters listed for the weekend rotation (the fourth is TBD), none pitched an inning for FHU last year. Jack Coleman and JC Chapman were both at Mid-Continent (Ky.) last season; Chapman as a redshirt and Coleman as a weekend starter where he went 6-4. Fares missed 2014 with an injury but went 6-1 in 2013 as a sophomore.
