Box Score 2 HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lions split a double-header to open their 2015 home schedule on Friday, taking game one from the University of Northwestern Ohio 8-4 before falling in the nightcap, 11-4.
The Lions (2-1) used a four-run second inning to take the lead in the opener, pounding out three doubles in the inning to go ahead 5-2. FHU maintained the lead the rest of the way and used two more in the sixth to build an 8-4 cushion heading into the final frame.
Peyton Meeker and Chase Young both hit solo shots for the Lions, who had eight extra-base hits in the win. Young went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs while Houston Looser and Zac Carter both had two hits apiece. Jack Coleman (1-0) worked six innings for the win, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out three in his first start as a Lion. Nolan Huber pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief.
FHU looked to be on its way to a sweep in game two, leading 3-0 after four thanks to a two-out, three-run home run by Argenis Salazar in the third. But UNOH got to Lion starter Ryan Fares (0-1) in the fifth as Fares began to have problems with his control. The Racers plated six runs, helped by three walks and an error, and took a 6-3 lead.
The Lions got one back in the bottom of the inning, but UNOH scored five times in the seventh and cut down Freed-Hardeman rallies before they started in the final three innings. FHU put runners on base early in each of those innings, but couldn't convert them into runs.
Salazar went 3-for-4 in game two while Garrett Ferguson went 2-for-3.
The series concludes with a double-header on Saturday beginning at 12:00 PM.
