FULTON, Mo. - The No. 17 Freed-Hardeman Lion baseball team did everything right Friday as Brandon Guske fanned 10 batters while the Lions pounded out 16 hits to complete a 9-0 shutout of William Woods in Fulton, Mo.
Guske (6-2) picked up the win for the Lions after working all nine innings and giving up just two hits while striking out 10. The win for Guske marks the fifth time this season he has shutout an opponent in seven starts. With the impressive outing, Guske has now reached 68 strikeouts for the season to go along with his 1.44 ERA.
Guske wasn't alone in regard to impressive play as the Lions pounded out 16 hits to put the game away early on. Chase Young led the Lions at the plate as he went 5-for-5 on the day delivering four singles and a double in the win. Griffin Siebert also contributed at the plate as he went 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI's while Darcy Moore went 1-for-3 and pounded out 3 RBI's.
The Lions (23-7, 8-2 AMC) got things started early with runs in the second and fourth innings by Houston Looser as he scored off a sacrifice fly to right field from Darcy Moore in the second and off a double down the left field line by Griffin Siebert in the fourth.
FHU added two runs in the sixth inning, as Darcy Moore doubled down the left field line to score Looser and Siebert to put the Lions up 4-0. The Lions would add another run in the eighth inning to extend their lead even more as Nate Van Nortwick would single up the middle to score Moore and put FHU up 5-0.
The Lions, however, would not be done as they would save their best inning for last as they pounded out six hits and four runs to put the game away in the ninth. Young, Carter, Garrett Ferguson and Looser would all score in the inning to give FHU all they needed to pick up the 9-0 shutout over William Woods.
With the win, the Lions move to 23-7 on the season and 8-2 in conference play.
