WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. - FHU Senior right fielder Darcy Moore pounded out an impressive five home runs Tuesday afternoon, as the Freed-Hardeman Lion baseball team picked up a sweep of Williams Baptist College with an 11-0 shutout in the opening game followed by a 14-6 win in the nightcap on the road in Walnut Ridge, Ark.
Jacob Sawyers picked up the win for FHU (15-10, 7-4) in the opening game after working all seven innings and allowing just five hits and no earned runs while striking out six batters.
The Lions offense took care of the rest, led by Moore who went 3-for-3 on the day with three home runs and three RBI. Josh Sears also found his pop at the plate, as he went 2-for-3 on the day with a double and two RBI while Griffin Siebert went 2-for-4 with a double and a homerun in the win.
Ethan Roberts suffered the loss for Williams Baptist (7-16, 2-9) after working just three innings and allowing four hits and four earned runs while striking out three.
The Lions got their scoring drive started in the second inning of the opener, as Cody Duncan belted out a triple to deep right field and crossed the plate in the next at bat following an RBI double by Siebert to put FHU up 1-0 early.
The Lions broke things open in the top of the third inning, as Kaimana Ancog, Wes Brooks and Josh Sears all crossed the plate early in the inning followed by a solo shot by Moore to put FHU up 5-0.
From there, the Lions never let their foot off the gas pedal, as the pushed two runs across in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to take a commanding 11-0 lead, which would be all they needed to secure the win. Moore belted out two more home runs in the game to bring his total to three home runs in the opener to aid FHU in the victory.
The momentum continued for the Lions in the second game of the day with the Eagles, as their bats stayed hot in a 14-6 victory in the nightcap. Darcy Moore continued his dominance at the plate, as he pounded out two more home runs to bring his total to five home runs on the day.
The Eagles held a slight edge after the first two innings, as they led 4-3; however, the Lions would limit WBC to just two more runs the remainder of the way while FHU pushed across 11 more runs to pull out the convincing victory.
Reed Johnson picked up the victory for FHU in the nightcap after working 4 and 2/3 innings and allowing just one hit and one earned run while striking out four. Seth Selby got the start for FHU and worked 1 and 1/3 innings and allowed five hits and four earned runs while striking out one.
The Lions pounded out 11 hits in the nightcap, led by Josh Sears, who went 3-for-6 with a double and four RBI while Darcy Moore went 2-for-4 with two home runs and and three RBI in the win.
With the sweep, the Lions move to 15-10 on the season and 7-4 in conference play. Williams Baptist falls to 7-16 on the season and 2-9 in AMC play with the sweep.
UP NEXT: The Lions continue their road schedule this weekend, as they make the trip to Missouri Baptist University for a three-game series beginning Friday, March 16 with a single nine-inning game slated for 2:00 PM in St. Louis, Mo.
