HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lion baseball team continued to roll Thursday evening, as they took down No. 12 Lyon College with a 9-4 victory in their series opener at Carnes Field.
The Lions (28-13, 14-6 AMC) relied on consistent play at the plate to take home the victory, led by Bryce Lester, who went 3-for-5 on the day with two runs and a stolen base. Wes Brooks continued his hot streak, as he went 2-for-4 at the plate and pounded out his 13th homerun on the season. Josh Sears, Aden Campbell and Joe Leatherwood also had multi-hit games, as each went 2-for-4 on the day.
Seth Selby (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after working 1 and 1/3 innings of relief and allowing no hits and no earned runs while striking out one. Jared Humphry got the start for the Lions and worked 3 and 2/3 innings and allowed nine hits and four earned runs while striking out three. Connor Creasy worked the final four innings for FHU and secured the save after giving up just two hits and striking out three.
Despite Lyon College (29-10, 20-4 AMC) getting on the board first with one run in the first inning, the Lions were not phased, as they pushed four runs of their own across in the bottom half to take an early 4-1 lead. The Lions pounded out four hits in the inning and cashed in on one error by the Scots to take the early lead.
The Lions added another run in the second inning to extend their lead to four runs, as Josh Sears crossed the plate after Collin McPherson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to put FHU up 5-1.
The Scots responded in the top part of the third inning with one run to close the gap to three runs at the 5-2 mark, as Kylan Barnett crossed the plate following an RBI single up the middle by Logan Reddick.
The Lions added another run in the bottom of the third inning, as Collin Baber crossed the plate following a sacrifice fly by Josh Sears to put FHU up 6-2.
The Scots clawed their way back in the top of the fourth inning, as Tanner Seibel and Tucker Harris both crossed the plate in the inning to pull Lyon College within two runs at the 6-4 mark midway through the game.
However, two runs would be as close as the Scots could get, as the Lions shut the Scots down at the plate the remainder of the way while adding three runs of their own, highlighted by a Wes Brooks homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning.
With the win, the Lions move to 28-13 on the season and 14-6 in conference play. Lyon College falls to 29-10 on the season and 20-4 in AMC play with the loss.
UP NEXT: The Lions conclude the three-game series with Lyon College Friday with a double-header scheduled for 1:00 PM at Carnes Field.
