HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman soccer teams opened their season at home Monday evening with a pair of losses to Georgetown College, as the Lady Lions fell 5-1 while the men's team suffered a 4-2 loss at the Josh Riley Soccer Complex.
The Lady Lions (0-1) kicked things off first and were challenged from the beginning, as Georgetown out-shot FHU 16-13 in the match, which included 13 shots on goal. The Tigers (1-2) were led by Bethany Massey, as she fired in two goals in the first half to give Georgetown all the momentum early on. Olivia Ashby, Cleome Kerseg and Emily Perry also chipped in goals of their own to make a comeback unlikely for FHU.
Despite the loss, the Lady Lions did break through with a goal of their own in the 67th minute, as Sam Clymer fired in a goal off an assist by Melissa Ross to pull FHU within four goals. However, despite the late goal, the Lady Lions could not muster any other offense in the match, as they fell 5-1.
With the loss, the Lady Lions fall to 0-1 on the season. With the win, the Tigers improve to 1-2 on the season.
Meanwhile in the men's match, the Lions (0-1) suffered a 4-2 loss, despite putting together a rally to begin the second half to pull within one goal with plenty of time left on the clock.
The Tigers (1-1) took an early lead in the match-up, as Noel Roman, Nick Gregory and Sanjay Karim all fired in goals in the first half to give Georgetown a 3-0 lead entering the break.
However, despite falling behind early, the Lions did not go down without a fight, as they fired in two goals of their own to begin the second half, courtesy of goals by Kenneth Ramirez and Andrij Sawczuk, to pull FHU within one goal at the 3-2 mark.
The match remained tight the remainder of the way, as both teams played solid on the defensive front; however, Noel Roman struck again for the Tigers with a goal in the 83rd minute to provide just enough cushion to secure a 4-2 win for Georgetown.
The Lions attempted 16 shots and 11 shots on goal compared to Georgetown College, who attempted 18 shots and 13 shots on goal in the match. Jacob Roberts gave up the two goals in the match for Georgetown while saving nine shots. Calum Langdale and Trace Haggard each logged minutes in the match, as Langdale gave up three goals and saved four shots while Haggard gave up one goal and saved five shots in the match.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 0-1 on the season. The Tigers move to 1-1 on the season with the win.
