Lions split with Toppers

Box Score

HENDERSON, Tenn. – The No. 9 Lions (12-9, 6-1 MSC) split with Blue Mountain (9-4) on Tuesday, winning game one 10-6, but falling 3-1 in game two.

Game one was a slug fest with five total home runs hit, two by the Toppers and three by the Lions.

The Toppers started the game off with a solo shot to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but an RBI double by Will McCall and a two-run bomb by Josh Sears gave the Lions a 3-1 lead after an inning of play.

Blue Mountain hit its second home run of the game in the top of the third to make it 3-2 and added another run to tie it before Sears led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run, the reigning Mid-South Conference Player of the Week's second long ball of the day, to give the Lions the lead.

The Toppers tied the game in the fourth and added runs in the fifth and sixth to take a two-run lead before the Lions put up a six spot in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-5 lead. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run by Beau Simpson.

Tyler Duskin earned the win in relief after throwing one and one-third innings with a strikeout.

Game two was a pitcher's dual for five innings, but the Toppers were able to take advantage of a few Lions defensive errors to push two runs across in the top of the sixth. They added one more run in the top of the seventh inning to make it a 3-0 contest.

The Lions started to rally in the bottom of the final inning when Riley Perks reached on a walk, Nathan Lewis reached on an error and Dom Pisano took first base on a catcher's interference. With two outs, Will McCall was able to stretch out an infield single, pushing Spence Patrick to make it a 3-1 game, but that was all the Lions were able to muster.

The Lions will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Georgetown for a three-game MSC series. Game one will be played at 5 p.m. central time, with Saturday's doubleheader starting at noon central time.
