Box Score The Freed-Hardeman University Lions (3-2) fell to the Scots of Lyon College (4-3) on Friday by a score of 5-3.
Alex Huey started on the mound for the Lions. After giving up a lead-off walk, Huey settled in and quickly got the next three outs to get the team in the dugout. The Lions jumped ahead early thanks to a 2-run bomb from Will McCall. The score was 2-0 at the end of the first.
The Scots were able to cut the lead in half with a lead-off triple followed by an RBI ground-rule double. Huey was able to limit the damage and got three consecutive outs and collected a strikeout. The Lions threatened to score in the bottom of the second with the bottom of the order, but they were unsuccessful at driving a run in. The score after the second was 2-1, Lions lead.
Huey worked out a bases-loaded jam and collected a pair of strikeouts. The Scots did not score in the third. The Lions went down 1-2-3 and did not record a hit in the bottom of the third. The score remained 2-1.
Once again, Huey worked out of a threatening inning and allowed no runs in the fourth. The Lions could not get anything going in the fourth.
Huey exited the game after 4 innings of work allowing 1 run on 7 hits, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts. Quin Bennett entered in for relief. Bennett exited after only 1/3 of an inning allowing 1 run on 3 hits, 0 walks, and 1 strikeout. Connor Creasy entered in for relief. After a string of wild pitches, the Scots were able to take a 3-2 over the Lions. The Lions could not get anything going in order to bring the score back even.
Creasy was able to settle in and work efficiently in the top of the sixth and collected two strikeouts. The Lions finally got their timely hit from Zach Sanders to drive in the tying run. At the end of the sixth, the score was 3-3.
Creasy surrendered a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh and the Scots took a 5-3 lead. The Lions were not able to overcome the run deficit and fell to the Scots. Creasy received the loss for the game after pitching 2 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, 0 walks, and 1 hbp.
The Lions look to bounce back and salvage what they can from the weekend against St. Francis later today and tomorrow.
