Box Score The Freed-Hardeman University Lions (12-4, 2-1 MSC) defeated the Scots of Lyon College (10-6) Tuesday evening by a score of 10-5. The Lions were able to rally back in the seventh to take the lead.
The Lions looked to strike in the first with two runners on base to start the game, but they could not scratch a run across. Mason Morgan got the nod to start on the mound. The Scots jumped out to a 3-run lead, but Morgan was able to limit the damage. The lead was 3-0.
The Lions again could not put anything together and were scoreless in the second. Morgan collected two strikeouts as he held the Scots to their young lead.
The Lions threatened to cut down the run deficit in the third, but they were unsuccessful in scoring. The Scots were able to score another run and Morgan exited after 2.1 innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts. Wesley Culley entered for relief. With bases loaded, Culley was able to pitch out of the jam.
In the fourth inning, the Lions went down 1-2-3. Culley returned and made quick work of the Scots while collecting two strikeouts.
The Lions were able to get a runner to third but could not drive the run in. Culley again worked efficiently and snagged two more strikeouts. The score after the fifth remained 4-0.
In the top of the sixth, the Lions were finally able to get into the run column after an RBI from Zach Sanders. The new score was 4-1. Culley exited after pitching 2.2 innings allowing no runs on 1 hit, 0 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Luis Torrez-Lopez entered for relief. The Scots answered back with a run of their own to make the new score 5-1.
Kent Rooklin drove in another run for the Lions in the seventh. After a bases-loaded walk, the Lions scored once more. William Kelley delivered with a 2-RBI double down the leftfield line to tie the game 5-5. A few walks later, the Lions scored another run. Another run scored after a wild pitch. The score after the half inning was 7-5. Torrez was able to hold the Scots and preserve the Lions new lead.
The Lions could not get anything going in the eighth. Torrez was able to get three quick outs with the help of his defense.
In the ninth inning, Zach Sanders recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score another run. Kimmey Johnson then hit an RBI single to score a run. The Lions scored their tenth run of the game after a wild pitch. The new lead was 10-5. Torrez exited after 3 innings pitched allowing 1 run on 3 hits, 0 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Connor Creasy entered to pitch in the bottom of the ninth. Creasy made quick work of the Scots and held the lead. Torrez received the win.
The Lions will travel to play the University of the Cumberlands Friday and Saturday.
