Box Score The Freed-Hardeman University Lions (24-8, 11-4 MSC) defeated the Toppers of Blue Mountain College Tuesday (16-16) Tuesday evening by a score of 15-7. The Lions outhit the Toppers with 14 hits and stayed ahead the entire game.
The Lions came out hot as they scored 4 runs in the first inning after RBI doubles from Will McCall, Zach Sanders, and William Kelley. Freshman Riley Keesey got the start on the mound for the Lions and posted a scoreless first inning of work.
In the second inning, the Lions added another 4 runs with RBIs from Sean Rooney, Kelley, Kent Rooklin, and Caleb Molo. In the bottom part of the inning, the Toppers were able to scratch a run after Keesey surrendered a solo homerun. The score after two innings was 8-1.
The Lions continued the hit parade in the third inning and scored 5 more runs. Rooney contributed with a sacrifice fly, McCall smashed a bomb over the leftfield wall for 2 RBIs, and Molo singled for 2 RBIs. The Toppers managed to score 3 runs in the bottom of the inning and the score was 13-4.
Keesey exited after 3 complete innings of work, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout. Evan Koob entered for relief. Koob was able to work quickly in the fourth to post a scoreless inning. In the fifth inning, he was able to work out of a jam to limit the Toppers to only 1 run. The score was 13-5.
Koob exited after 2 complete innings of work, allowing 1 run on 1 hit, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout. Luis Torrez-Lopez entered for relief. Lopez pitched the sixth inning surrendering 2 runs on 4
hits and 1 walk. The score after the sixth was 13-7.
In the seventh, Kelley extended the Lions' lead with a sacrifice fly to make the score 14-7. Wesley Culley entered for relief and threw two scoreless innings. After 2 complete innings of work, he allowed 0 runs on 0 hits, 0 walks, and 3 strikeouts.
In the ninth, Sanders was able to scratch another run across for the Lions after great baserunning. The score was 15-7. Mason Morgan entered to pitch and finished the game with a 1-2-3 inning.
The Lions look ahead to their next weekend contest at Cumberland University this Friday and Saturday.
