Box Score The Freed-Hardeman University Lions (15-5, 4-2 MSC) defeated the Falcons of Fisher College (9-7) by a score of 7-0. Stellar pitching held the Falcons to just three hits and no runs the entire game.
Freshman lefthander Wesley Culley got the start for the Lions. He made quick work of the Falcons in the first. The Lions were able to scratch a run across in the first and take the lead early. The score after the first was 1-0.
Culley again was able to work efficiently and hold the Lions' young lead. The Lions increased their lead from RBI doubles from Christian Presley and Sean Rooney. The new score was 4-0.
The southpaw returned and posted a 1-2-3 inning in the third to keep the lead. The Lions could not put anything together to score. The score remained 4-0.
Culley once again held the Falcons to no hits and collected a pair of strikeouts in the fourth. The Lions went scoreless in the bottom part of the inning and the score stayed at 4-0.
The freshman hurler again made quick work of the Falcons and boasted another 3 up 3 down inning. The Lions added two more runs to their lead after a runner scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Kent Rooklin. The score after the fifth was 6-0.
Culley exited the game after 5 innings pitched, allowing 0 runs on 1 hit, 0 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Luis Torrez-Lopez entered for relief. Torrez made quick work of the Falcons. The Lions threatened to extend their lead with runners in scoring position but were unable to drive them in. The score remained 6-0.
Torrez held Fisher to just one hit in the seventh. The Lions could not get anything going in the bottom part of the inning.
Torrez exited after 2 innings of work, allowing 0 runs on 2 hits, 0 walks, and 1 strikeout. Connor Creasy entered for relief. Creasy worked quickly to shut the Falcons down. In the bottom of the eighth, Mason Libla hit an opposite-field moonshot to add to the Lions' lead. The score after the eighth was 7-0.
Creasy posted a 1-2-3 inning to finish the game. Culley received the win.
The Lions will play one more game against Fisher College tomorrow at Five Wells Field.
