Box Score The Freed-Hardeman University Lions (16-5, 4-2 MSC) defeated the Falcons of Fisher College (9-8) Tuesday afternoon by a score of 9-1. The Lions made great plays and got key barrels to push the team on top.
Freshman Riley Keesey got his first career start for the Lions. He was very efficient as he made quick work of the Falcons. The Lions jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead after RBI hits from William Kelley, Zach Sanders, and Kimmey Johnson.
Keesey returned in the second and again made quick work of the Fisher hitters. The Lions could not put anything together to score in the bottom part of the inning.
The freshman remained settled in as he only allowed one hit in the third. The Lions looked to add to their lead but could not drive in the runner in scoring position.
The Falcons threatened to score in the fourth but Keesey shut down their efforts. The Lions threatened to extend their lead after loading the bases, but they could not drive the runners in.
The southpaw held the Falcons to a 3 up 3 down inning. The Lions stranded two runners on base and scored no runs in the fifth.
Keesey worked quickly to hold the Falcons to no runs in the sixth. The Lions were able to increase their lead after a two-RBI single from Christian Presley. The new score was 5-0.
Keesey exited after 6 innings pitched, allowing 0 runs on 4 hits, 0 walks, and 1 strikeout. Evan Koob entered the game for relief. The Falcons threatened to cut the Lions' lead down by many runs but Koob was able to limit them to just one run. The new score was 5-1. The Lions could not scratch a run across in the seventh.
Koob held the Falcons to no runs in the top of the eighth. The Lions added much needed insurance after RBI hits from Presley, Sean Rooney, and Will McCall. The new score was 9-1.
Koob exited after 2 innings of work, allowing 1 run on 2 hits, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts. Quin Bennett entered in the ninth. He pitched quickly to close out the game. Keesey received the win.
The Lions will travel to Thomas More for a three-game series on Thursday and Friday.
