HENDERSON, Tenn. — Despite staring down a top-five opponent, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions held the (4) University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) to two goals, seeing the Patriots escape with a 2-0 victory.
Freed-Hardeman (4-2-1, 0-1-0 MSC) tightened the defensive screws in the first half, allowing just four Patriot shots. Of those four, the Lady Lions forced all but one to be off target, with sophomore keeper Brooke Latham saving the one shot on goal in the first half.
Camryn Kime set the tone for FHU in the first two minutes of play, firing off a shot from a free kick that dinged off of the Cumberlands (6-0-2, 1-0-0 MSC) crossbar. Sara Becerra followed suit in the 29th minute with a shot that was kept out by the Patriots' goalie.
After the first half ended with the scores level, the Cumberlands offense began to click, rattling off 17 second-half shots. The Patriots got on the board at 73:39 when a free kick from just outside of the six-yard box was quickly sent to their leading goalscorer, Jayden Boelter, whose one-timer notched her 10th goal of the season.
Boelter scored again when, at 82:49, a chip-shot went just over the fingertips of Latham to give CU the 2-0 win.
Despite the loss, Latham kept out a season-high 10 saves in the Mid-South Conference opener.
