HENDERSON, Tenn. — Off to their best start in five seasons, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions bested the visiting Lady Toppers of Blue Mountain (Miss.) College 3-0 on a clear Thursday night.
FHU's (3-1-0) offense was on full display as the Lady Lions out-shot their counterparts 13-9. Jessica Musselman got the Lady Lions on the board first at 19:52 after Sara Becerra sent a pass across the center line on the left side where an open Zoe Stom squared up to send the ball to the box where Musselman was one-on-one with the last BMC defender, where her sliding kick gave the Lady Lions the goal.
Nearly 10 minutes later, more craftiness by the FHU attackers came at 29:38 when Stom caught the Blue Mountain (1-3-0) defense napping on a free kick. After Tori Ford sent to ball toward the net, Stom found her way behind the Lady Toppers to bury her third goal of the season.
Crossing halftime, the Lady Toppers began to pick up, firing four shots on goal in the second half. But it was the Lady Lions to net a goal when Jalen Johnson stole a clearing attempt off the top-right corner of the box and fired it back toward the net. The BMC keeper was ready and waiting for an FHU header, only the pass was intended for the next Lady Lion, Morgan Leighton, who toed in her first goal of the season at the 87:22 mark.
Brooke Latham picked up her third clean sheet of the season, saving all five Lady Topper shots on goal.
