Lionesses dominate glass to earn Friday win

HENDERSON — In the first game of a weekend FHU Classic, the (RV) Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions out-rebounded the (RV) Oakland City (Ind.) University Mighty Oaks 39-28 to help push to a 58-42 victory.

Freed-Hardeman (6-1) jumped out to a massive lead after Elli Chumley and Kaylee Odom bucketed points before Oakland City tallied a layup at 7:11. That layup proved to be the only basket for the Mighty Oaks in the first quarter, while FHU would score 11 unanswered points to explode to a 15-2 lead after the first quarter.

Oakland City (1-3) was able to find the hoop more in the second quarter, chipping away at FHU's lead at the free-throw line. OCU was 7-7 from the line in the second quarter. The final five minutes were all KJ White for the Lady Lions, with the senior converting a three-point play before back to back layups helped FHU take a 26-9 lead with 2:49 remaining in the half. Oakland City would bounce back by scoring the final seven points before the break to trail 26-16.

The Lady Lions battled back in the third quarter, with Kalea Fleming-Eckerle's 3-pointer being followed by a Chumley layup to put FHU on top by 18 with 7:10 left in the third quarter. A Carissa Curtis 3-pointer was followed by a Kelsey Bender layup to move to the final frame with FHU leading 41-27.

Back on the floor, Rachel Satterly drained a 3-pointer in the opening seconds of the final quarter, but OCU would answer with a triple of their own at 7:16. In the middle of the quarter, FHU would utilize a 8-0 run to take a game-high 22 points lead 56-34. A late flurry from Oakland City helped, but ultimately the game ended in a 58-42 victory for FHU.

KJ White led FHU's offense with 12 points, while Kaylee Odom ended the night with 10 points and a team-high four steals. Kelsey Bender led the FHU rebounding with seven boards, and Raegan Purvine dishing out three assists.
