HENDERSON — In the first game of a weekend FHU Classic, the (RV) Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions out-rebounded the (RV) Oakland City (Ind.) University Mighty Oaks 39-28 to help push to a 58-42 victory.
Freed-Hardeman (6-1) jumped out to a massive lead after
Elli Chumley and
Kaylee Odom bucketed points before Oakland City tallied a layup at 7:11. That layup proved to be the only basket for the Mighty Oaks in the first quarter, while FHU would score 11 unanswered points to explode to a 15-2 lead after the first quarter.
Oakland City (1-3) was able to find the hoop more in the second quarter, chipping away at FHU's lead at the free-throw line. OCU was 7-7 from the line in the second quarter. The final five minutes were all
KJ White for the Lady Lions, with the senior converting a three-point play before back to back layups helped FHU take a 26-9 lead with 2:49 remaining in the half. Oakland City would bounce back by scoring the final seven points before the break to trail 26-16.
The Lady Lions battled back in the third quarter, with
Kalea Fleming-Eckerle's 3-pointer being followed by a Chumley layup to put FHU on top by 18 with 7:10 left in the third quarter. A
Carissa Curtis 3-pointer was followed by a
Kelsey Bender layup to move to the final frame with FHU leading 41-27.
Back on the floor,
Rachel Satterly drained a 3-pointer in the opening seconds of the final quarter, but OCU would answer with a triple of their own at 7:16. In the middle of the quarter, FHU would utilize a 8-0 run to take a game-high 22 points lead 56-34. A late flurry from Oakland City helped, but ultimately the game ended in a 58-42 victory for FHU.
KJ White led FHU's offense with 12 points, while
Kaylee Odom ended the night with 10 points and a team-high four steals.
Kelsey Bender led the FHU rebounding with seven boards, and
Raegan Purvine dishing out three assists.

The Lady Lions will be back in action at the Brewer Sports Center tomorrow, Saturday November 18, to take on the Oakwood (Ala.) University Ambassadors at 6:30 p.m. following the 4:30 p.m. game between Oakland City and Bethel (Tenn.) University.
