CONWAY, Ark. — Despite taking an early lead, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions soccer team saw the hosting Central Baptist (Ark.) College Mustangs net the equalizer before scoring the game-winner in the waning moments in the 2-1 final.
It was
Catherine Harris's aggresive play that put FHU (0-2-0) on the board first after drawing a foul while inside the box, being awarded a penalty kick at 13:48. Lining up for the penalty shot, her initial attempt was saved by the CBC keeper; however, Harris immediately saw the ball ricochet back toward her, firing a second-chance shot that first pinged the crossbar before finding its way into the net to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.
Central Baptist (2-0-0) answered in a similar manner at 35:47, then Vitoria Loiola's shot hit the crossbar before bouncing back into play - but not before completely crossing the goal line to level the score.
Nearly 50 minutes of tied soccer passed until Loiola struck again in the 86th minute, when a deep free kick from Amanda Parreiras sailed over the heads of the FHU defenders, settling inside the box where Loiola timed the bounce and found the back of the net for the game-winner.
FHU got off six shots, four of which were on-target, while CBC fired 10, nine of which were in the first half with the lone shot of the second half being the winning one.
Brooke Latham swatted away six saves in the loss, while
Catherine Harris led the offense with three shots - two on goal.
