Women's volleyball drops first weekend contest

BATESVILLE, Ark. — Despite taking an early lead, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions fell on Friday night to the Lyon (Ark.) College Scots 3-1 (16-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-22) in the first of a two-match Arkansas road trip.

The FHU Lady Lions (8-4) were off and running in the first set when Avery Harris tagged a pair of blocks, one with the help of Avery Young, in the middle of a 6-0 run to take a 7-3 lead. In the blink of an eye; however, the hosting Scots climbed their way out of the deficit to a lone point at 15-14. To close the set, Lyon had a string of seven attack errors with the help of a kill from Harris and a tandem block from Harris and Catherine Hackett, eventually leading to a 25-16 win for FHU.

In the second set, Lyon (1-6) took an early lead that the Lady Lions were unable to match. In the middle of the match, the teams traded serves for eight straight rallies. With FHU trailing 19-15, the Scots tallied four unanswered points to put the set out of reach 22-15 before slamming the door to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-17 set win.

The third set was the very definition of flip-flop, with FHU and Lyon drawing even for 12 tie scores and six different lead changes. Tied as late as 18-18, the Scots put it into another gear and stunned the Lady Lions with seven unanswered points to take the set 25-18 and lead the match two sets to one.

The Lady Lions fell behind early in the fourth set as FHU hoped to take the match the distance, but could never fully close the gap, with a Hackett kill seeing the Lady Lions down 22-21, but could get no closer as Lyon finished the comeback with a 25-22 win.

FHU was led offensively by their middles, with both Ann Elise Jackson and Catherine Hackett tallying nine kills, with Avery Harris trailing with eight. Masey Kate Adams racked up another double-double with 13 digs and 17 assists. Charley Fulton pulled up a team-high 16 digs, while Alanys Ruíz Rivera chipped in with 12 and Avery Young had 11.
