Bender's double-double not enough as Lady Lions fall to #3 Tigers

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — In the toughest test of the season the No. 22 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions faced off with the No. 3 Campbellville (Ky.) University Lady Tigers. Despite trailing by one possession late in the fourth quarter, the Lady Lions watched as the hosts sank late free throws to end with FHU falling in a 62-58 loss.

Rachel Satterly got the Lady Lions (16-4, 2-2 MSC) on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer before Kelsey Bender and Elli Chumley added a layup each. After the Lady Tigers added five points to take a four-point lead, Kalea Fleming-Eckerle's triple began a 10-point run that ended with FHU leading 20-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was the biggest differential with Campbellsville (17-1, 4-0 MSC) out-scoring FHU 19-9. KJ White opened the frame with a jumper, but the Tigers followed by scoring 13 unanswered points before Bender's layup ended the dry spell at 4:21 with FHU behind 28-24. Late free throws in the half saw the Lady Lions down by five with a  34-29 halftime score.

Campbellsville took their largest lead in the third quarter, with a 3-pointer at 7:37 putting the hosts ahead by 13, but back-to-back-to-back triples from Raegan Purvine, Satterly, and Fleming-Eckerle kept the Lady Lions close, eventually moving into the final frame down 49-43.

The fourth quarter was layups against free throws with FHU collecting 10 points in the paint while the Lady Tigers scored seven points at the charity stripe. White's layup at 6:23 pulled the Lady Lions within one point before the Tigers answered with a layup of their own. Chumley's layup made it a 55-54 score before Campbellsville added three unanswered points. Satterly added two late layups, but CU was 4-4 from the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds to seal the 62-58 final.

FHU out-rebounded CU 31-24 with both teams showing good ball movement, combining for 32 assists.

Kelsey Bender notched her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Rachel Satterly bucketed a team-high 15 points in addition to a Lady Lion leading four assists.
