BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. — The Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions opened their first road game by connecting on nine of their first 10 shots to help them pick up the 90-80 win over the Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) University Toppers.
After both teams bucketed layups,
Rachel Satterly and
Carissa Curtis splashed home back-to-back 3-pointers before
Jenna Satterly's long ball put the Lady Lions (2-0) up by double digits with an 18-8 lead at the 4:34 mark. The hosting Toppers hit four free throws in the final minute to narrow the gap and end the first quarter with FHU leading 23-19.
It was BMCU's (1-1) turn to connect from downtown with the Toppers tallying five 3-pointers in the second quarter, with a layup at 7:54 giving Blue Mountain a 26-27 lead. BMCU would eventually extend their lead to seven before
Lilly Kee ignited a 10-0 run that ended with the Lady Lions leading 45-42 at the intermission.
Freed-Hardeman opened the second half with 3-pointers from R. Satterly and
Brooklyn Crouch before free throws from J. Satterly book-ended a nine-point run to give FHU their largest lead of the night at 13 with a 64-51 score with 2:15 left in the third quarter. The Toppers added seven unanswered points to end the frame and move into the final 10 minutes with FHU maintaining a 64-58 lead.
Consecutive 3-pointers from the Toppers helped to level the score at 68-68. FHU was a perfect 19-19 from the charity stripe with 14 of those coming in the fourth quarter. The Lady Lions connected on five layups as the only field goals in the last quarter, with the remaining points coming from the free-throw line to keep the Topper's at bay for a 90-80 victory.Â
The Lady Lions won the battle at the glass with 27 rebounds to BMCU's 20.Â
Rachel Satterly led FHU's offense with 17 points, followed closely by sister Jenna Sattery's 15-point night.
Kaylee Odom recorded 14 points while
Lilly Kee dropped 13 points.
Kelsey Bender chipped in with 112 points. J. Satterly grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while Odom gave out five assists.
