HENDERSON — Returning to the Brewer Sports Center, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions took advantage of a big second quarter to propel them to an 83-52 victory over the Bulldogs of Fisk (Tenn.) University.
Despite giving up an opening 3-pointer, the Lady Lion (3-0) defense flexed in the first 10 minutes of the game, forcing eight straight missed Fisk shots. Meanwhile,
Brooklyn Crouch scored five straight points on fast breaks before
Carissa Curtis joined at 6:43 with a 3-pointer that gave the Lady Lions a lead they would not relinquish. From 5:34 until the end of the half, the Lady Lions did not miss a single shot by going 7-7 to wrap the first half.
Rachel Satterly netted the first of her five 3-pointers while
Jenna Satterly laid up a fast-break layup to end the quarter with a 21-12 advantage.
The second quarter was all Lady Lions with FHU out-scoring Fisk (0-1) 23-9.
Lucy Curry tallied a pair of free throws before Curtis and R. Satterly netted back-to-back triples to jump out to a 21-point lead. A jumper from
Kelsey Bender in the waning seconds set the halftime Lady Lion lead at 44-19.
R. Satterly continued her hot shooting into the second half, opening the third quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers before a layup from Curtis made the Lady Lion lead 30. A third tray in the quarter from R. Satterly put the Lady Lions in a 63-33 lead in the final frame.
Though the Bulldogs would chip away at the Lady Lion lead, FHU always answered with 3-pointers from J. Satterly,
Reese Moore, and
Alaina Stiles before Moore's 3-pointer ended the game in style giving FHU the 83-52 win.
Despite only one turnover separating them - Fisk with 19 and FHU with 18 - the Lady Lions always responded by allowing just four points off of those turnovers. On the other hand, FHU netted 24 points off the Fisk turnovers. FHU's ball movement showed with the Lady Lions giving out 22 assists to the Bulldogs' five.
Rachel Satterly led all scorers with 15 points, followed by
Carissa Curtis and
Jenna Satterly with 13 points each.
Lilly Kee went 5-8 from the field to score 10. R. Satterly led FHU at the glass with six rebounds while the Satterly sisters each gave out a team-high five assists
