HENDERSON — In the second half of a weekend series, the No. 25 Freed-Hardeman University Lions won their first series of the season by shutting out the Viterbo (Wis.) University V-Hawks 8-0.
After a scoreless first inning, the Lions (3-0) got on the board in the bottom of the second inning after
William Kelley connected for a home run that sneaked inside the pole in left field to give FHU a 1-0 advantage.Â
Trace Anderson would draw a one-out walk in the bottom of the fourth inning before beating the throw from the Viterbo (0-3) catcher to steal second. The speed paid off with Anderson wrapping around to tap home thanks to
Jordan Carter's RBI double past a diving V-Hawk. Carter would score himself after back-to-back wild pitches to give the Lions a 3-0 advantage after four complete innings.
FHU would plate five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, three of which were unearned. Carter scored his second run of the game with
JJ Pruneau's RBI double down the third base line. With a runner on third with one out,
Cade Fuller intended to sacrifice his at-bat to score the run; however, the freshman beat the throw to first for an RBI single.
Christian Presley and
Cam Madding would then connect for RBI singles to put a bow on the five-run inning to set the final score at 8-0.
Houston High (1-0) got the victory, tossing five full innings of scoreless baseball. The junior struck out two while allowing two hits.
Evan Koob (2) shut the door to earn a hitless save where he struck out six V-Hawks.
Christian Presley and
Cade Fuller both ended the day with a pair of hits with six different Lions driving in runs.
