Softball takes two over Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — After splitting their last series the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions softball team won the first two games of a four-game series against the Tigers of Georgetown (Ky.) College. In the first game the Lady Lions won 10-4 before shutting out the Tigers 8-0 in six innings.

With Karli Quillin opening the game with a double to left field, the Lady Lions (12-9, 4-0 MSC) opened up with the first of 14 hits after Natalie Gilmore and Alivia Eggleston followed with singles to load the bases with Eggleston's driving home the first run of the day. Chloe Carter sacrificed her at-bat to score Gilmore and give the Lady Lions a 2-0 lead after the first half-inning.

Eggleston led off the top of the third inning with her second single with Brooklyn Jimmerson and Carter following with singles to load the bases. Brinley Cousar's groundout drove home a run before Grayson Mayo's sacrifice fly score the fourth run of the game. Carter would score after an error by the Georgetown (4-8, 0-1 MSC) pitcher to lead 5-0.

After GC picked up a pair of runs in the third inning, Eggleston hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth to give FHU a 6-2 edge. Quillin connected for another single in the top of the fifth to drive in the seventh Lady Lion run with Myleah Hardy finding the outfield grass in the top of the sixth to drive home the eighth run. Kiersten Perry's groundout in the sixth drove in a run while Eggleston's third hit in the top of the seventh drove home the 10th and final Lady Lion run.

Kylee Brown (6-3) tossed the complete game for FHU, striking out seven Tigers in the victory.

Natalie Gilmore led the FHU hitting by going 4-5 from the dish with Alivia Eggleston going 3-4 and driving in three runs. Karli Quillin was 3-5 with one RBI in the victory.

Four hits including back-to-back doubles opened things up in the top of the second inning for the Lady Lions (13-9, 4-2 MSC) with Myleah Hardy's RBI double being follow by a two-run two-bagger from Kiersten Mesler to give FHU a 3-0 edge. Hardy would drive in the fourth Lady Lion run with a sacrifice fly scoring Brinley Cousar after her triple led off the fourth inning.

The Lady Lions extended their lead over the GC Tigers (4-9, 0-2 MSC) to five when Brooklyn Jimmerson singled home Karli Quillin in the top of the fifth. FHU would push the score over the run-rule limit in the top of the sixth inning after Kiersten Perry's groundout scored Cousar and Quillin's single driving home two. With the Tigers going down scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, FHU claimed the 8-0 run-rule victory.

Chloe Winters (3-3) struck out four Tigers in the shutout victory.

Brinley Cousar was a perfect 3-3 from the plate with Myleah Hardy's 2-2 afternoon driving in a pair of runs. Kiersten Mesler and Karli Quillin both collected two hits and drove in two runs.

The Lady Lions and the Tigers will wrap up the four-game series with a doubleheader on March 24 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
