HENDERSON — The No. 22 Freed-Hardeman University Lions leaned on senior pitcher
Colton Huntt's complete game on Friday's 5-3 victory over the Campbellsville (Ky.) University Tigers.
The Lions (24-10, 5-2 MSC) had four hits in the bottom of the first inning led by
Brady Spring's single up the middle was followed by
Adam Smithson's single to center.
Austin Johnson then drove both runners home with a double to right-center to put FHU ahead.
JJ Pruneau would then score Johnson with a single to make the score 3-0.
Campbelllsville (15-9, 2-2 MSC) answered with a run in the top of the second inning where they combined for four hits. FHU exited the inning on a high note when a single that would have loaded the bases ended when
Christian Presley threw a strike from center field to throw the lead runner out at the plate after a single.
FHU kept rolling on the bases in the bottom of the third after Smithson connected for his second hit before Johnson's second base knock of the day loaded the bases. Pruneau fired a missile up the middle of the diamond to drive in two runs to give the Lions a 5-1 edge.
After the Tigers added a run in both the fourth and fifth inning, Huntt settled down to retire the next 10 batters in order before a double and a walk in the top of the ninth inning put the tying run on base, but the Lions escaped the inning and claimed the 5-3 win.
Huntt (6-3) threw a career-hihg 134 pitches it the complete-game victory, fanning nine Tigers while surrendering just one walk.
JJ Pruneau was 3-4 from the plate where he drove in three Lions.
Austin Johnson and
Adam Smithson both tallied two base hits in the win.
