HENDERSON — The No. 22 Freed-Hardeman University Lions held a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth inning, but the visiting Georgetown (Ky.) College Tigers smacked two home runs, including a 3-run homer to see the Lions fall 5-2.
FHU (30-14, 10-6 MSC) and GC each had one baserunner in the first three innings of play, but it was the Tigers to score the first run after a one-out double was followed by a stolen base and an errant throw to take a 1-0 lead.
The Lions answered in the bottom of the fifth inning when the bases became loaded with Lions after the Georgetown (25-17, 7-6 MSC) pitcher hit three straight batsmen.
Adam Smithson then rocketed a ball that was stopped by the first baseman; however, Smithson beat the throw to the covering pitcher to drive in two runs and give the Lions a 2-1 lead.
That lead stayed the same until Georgetown led off the top of the ninth inning with a home run to the opposite field to knot the game at 2-2. A walk and a single was followed by a pinch hitter sending the first pitch he saw over the fence in left field to blast a three-run shot to give the Tigers the 5-2 lead.Â
Cam Madding and
Kimmey Johnson got on base in the bottom of the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate, but Georgetown struck out the final two batters to end the game.
The ninth inning was the lone blemish in an otherwise dominant performance from
Colton Huntt (7-5). The senior tossed 8 2/3 innings where he struck out a career high 14 batters while surrendering just one walk.
The Lions had six hits, with
Cam Madding's two hits being the only multi-hit day for the Lions.
