FHU tops Bethel twice

HENDERSON — The (RV) Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions got their weekend started with a bang, defeating the Bethel (Tenn.) University Lady Wildcats twice in the final homestand of the season. After besting the Cats 7-0 in game one, the Lady Lions wrapped up the day with a 3-0 win in game two.

Game 1
BU - 0
FHU - 7

After Chloe Carter led off the bottom of the Freed-Hardeman (22-15, 11-8 MSC) second by reaching on an error, Brinley Cousar laced a single into right field. After Grayson Mayo's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Olivia White drove home the first two Lady Lion runs with a double to left field.

Brooklyn Jimmerson later connected for a double to drive home Alivia Eggleston to give the Lady Lions a 4-0 lead after five full innings. The Lady Wildcats (12-23, 3-14 MSC) led off the top of the sixth inning with a single, but a double play on a strikeout and an attempted steal erased the baserunner to keep the score at 4-0.

Four singles in the bottom of the sixth included RBI hits from Karli Quillin and Natalie Gilmore before the pair teamed up for a double steal that ended with Quillin scoring the seventh and final FHU run.

Chloe Winters (6-5) picked up the victory in relief, entering with the bases loaded and no outs, but promptly striking out the side to start a nine-punchout performance.

Olivia White led FHU's offense, going 3-3 with three RBI in the win. Karli Quillin had three hits with Brinley Cousar collecting two.

Game 2
BU - 0
FHU - 3

The Lady Lions (23-15, 12-8 MSC) struck hard and fast in the bottom of the first inning with Karli Quillin leading off with a double down the line in left, moving to third thanks to a single from Natalie Gilmore. The double steal again worked to perfection with Quillin scoring the first run of the game. With Alivia Eggleston smacking a double to left-center, Gilmore scored to give FHU a 2-0 edge.

Kiersten Mesler drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth to give the Lady Lions a 3-0 lead. Bethel (12-24, 3-15) was able to put a runner on third in the top of the sixth with one out, but the Lady Lions retired the next two batters to keep the shutout intact.

Kylee Brown (9-4) collected the complete game shutout, allowing just two hits.

Karli Quillin had two of FHU's seven hits in the victory.
