Lady Lion softball picks up series win over Campbellsville

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Finishing up their road series in Kentucky, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions won both games of a doubleheader to take the series over the (RV) Tigers of Campbellsville (Ky.) University. In game one, FHU took advantage of five CU errors to win 7-2 before finishing up the weekend with a 6-5 victory.

Game 1
FHU - 7
CU -  2

After Karli Quillin led off the first game for the Lady Lions (20-11, 9-4 MSC) with a single, Natalie Gilmore and Alivia Eggleston followed with base hits. Eggleston's single was enough to bring home Quillin to plate the first run of the day. Chloe Carter later drove home Eggleston to give the Lady Lions a 2-0 edge.

Eggleston continued her big weekend at the dish, taking the Campbellsville (21-11, 10-5 MSC) pitcher's offering over the fence to put the Lady Lions on top 3-0. Olivia White led off the top of the fourth with her career's first hit being a home run to give FHU a 4-0 edge after the top of the fourth. A two-out single from the Tigers in the fourth inning got CU on the board, but FHU still maintained the 4-1 lead.

After Eggleston walked to lead off the fifth, her pinch runner - Gracie Wilson - stole second before scoring on a CU error to go up 5-1. Kiersten Mesler connected for a single in the top of the second, scoring on Molli Deere's RBI double before the fifth Tiger error allowed Carter to score FHU's final run in the 7-2 victory.

Brittany Adair (6-3) tossed a complete game where she fanned nine Tiger batters.

Alivia Eggleston led the Lady Lions' offensive production by going 3-3 from the plate while driving in two runs. Olivia White also drove in two with one hit.

Game 2
FHU - 6
CU - 5

The Lady Lions (21-11, 8-4 MSC) and the Tigers combined for 25 hits in the final game of the series. Campbellsville opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a one-out home run to jump ahead 1-0 before the Lady Lions had a big third frame. Kiersten Perry led off with a single before Natalie Gilmore's single and Alivia Eggleston's walk loaded the bases with one out. Kiersten Mesler lifted a sacrifice fly to score Perry before Brinley Cousar and Molli Deere moved the carousel with singles to score two more runs and give FHU a 3-1 lead.

Campbellsville (21-12, 10-6 MSC) tacked on a second run in the home half of the fourth to narrow FHU's lead to 3-2. The Lady Lions picked up two more runs in the top of the fifth when Cousar drove home the fourth run before Olivia White's single plated Kiersten Mesler to give FHU a 5-2 edge.

A two-run double from the Tigers kept the game close before Chloe Carter laced a double in the top of the sixth inning to give the Lady Lions a 6-4 edge. That extra run provided much-needed insurance as Campbellsville scored their fifth run in the bottom of the seventh before a strikeout ended the game in FHU's favor.

Katelyn Bradford pitched 3 1/3 innings of her start, striking out two, before Kylee Brown (8-3) picked up the win with 3 2/3 innings of action where she punched out four.

Chloe Carter led FHU's hitting with three base knocks while Molli Deere, Alivia Eggleston and Natalie Gilmore tallied two hits each. Brinley Cousar led the Lady Lion run production with two RBI.
