PARIS — After falling twice yesterday, the Spain 3x3 women's basketball team bounced back to win twice on Friday, guaranteeing a spot in the top six to advance to the knockout round. Spain first topped Australia 21-17 in 8:10 before needing overtime to defeat Canada 22-20.
After a quick bucket by the Australians, FHU alumna Grace Alonso de Armiño gave The Reds their first point at 9:25. Though that was her only bucket, she would lead her team again with four rebounds before a free throw from Vega Gimeno sealed the first game of the day in a 21-17 final.
Alonso de Armiño had her best game of the tournament in the overtime thriller against Canada, falling one point short of a double-5 with four points and six rebounds.
Spain has one more game of pool play to gear up for the knockout round. They will face the current leading squad in Germany who has only lost one game in the pool play round. Tipoff from the Place de la Concorde is August 3 at 11:00 a.m.
With a victory over Germany tomorrow the Spanish team would finish pool play in first place and receive a bye to the semifinal round, putting them within two games of a medal. Spain and Australia are currently tied in second place with four wins each, but with the win over the Aussies today, the red and gold are in charge of the tiebreaker. Australia faces host nation France at 11:35 a.m.
