Lady Lions suffer first defeat in Kentucky

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — After skyrocketing to the No. 7 spot in the NAIA polls, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions fell for the first time in the 2024-25 campaign to the No. 16 University of the Cumberlands Patriots 77-71.

Neither team had a solid start from the floor with both the Lady Lions (17-1, 1-1 MSC) and the Patriots connect for two field goals in the first five minutes of the game. The hosts scored six unanswered points to take an 8-4 lead before Rachel Satterly's jumper was followed by a 3-pointer from Carissa Curtis to wrap up the first period with FHU trailing 12-9.

After the Patriots (15-3, 1-1 MSC) jumped out to a 10-point lead, Curtis dropped a second long ball before the Satterly sisters mounted a furious comeback with Rachel Satterly opening with a 3-pointer and closing with Jenna Satterly tallying a 3-pointer. Brooklyn Crouch put a bow on the 10-0 run with a layup at 1:53 to knot the game 30-30. Late jumpers from UC set the halftime score at 34-30.

The second half turned into free throw practice for the Patriots, going 8-8 in the third quarter and 13-19 in the fourth quarter from the line. The Lady Lions would stay at arm's length the remainder of the game until the 77-71 final.

Though the Lady Lions were nearly perfect from the free-throw line by going 12-13, the Patriots were 25-33. FHU took away nine steals to UC's four.

Carissa Curtis led FHU with 17 points after going 5-10 from beyond the arc. Rachel Satterly followed with a 15-point effort while Jenna Satterly had 11 points. Kaylee Odom wrapped up the double-digit scoring with 10 points. Kelsey Bender grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
