NASHVILLE — The Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions battled the Fisk University Bulldogs on Tuesday night. For the fourth time this season the ladies went the distance, but fell short 3-2 (22-25, 29-27, 25-14, 21-25, 15-9) to Fisk.
Freed-Hardeman (11-8) spread the love early with
Hope Breen,
Allie Lowhorn,
Morgan Jackson, and
Audrey Orton all registering kills to help FHU tak a 6-4 lead. Later kills from Orton and Jackson pushed the lead to 18-12 before sitting on set point 24-17. After a furious Bulldog comeback, Breen's kill wrapped the opening frame with a 25-22 win.
Fisk's (16-5) middles stood tall in the second set with the Bulldogs sending back two early blocks to take a 9-3 lead. It was FHU in the second frame that mounted the comeback, turning a 13-7 deficit into a 21-20 lead thanks to back-to-back aces from
Becca Heineman. The squads traded points into extras before Fisk took the two-point lead to even the match with a 29-27 set win.
The third set featured two long momentum swings with FHU scoring six unanswered points early before Fisk responded with a 8-1 run of their own. A kill from
Iza Wos setting the score at 18-14 was the final FHU point with the Bulldogs riding the remaining points to take a 2-1 match lead with a 25-14 set win.
Knowing they needed a win to stay alive in the match, the Lady Lions came out to take a 11-2 lead thanks in part to three aces from Orton. The Bulldogs managed to chip away at the lead, but could not make up ground completely with FHU forcing a fifth set with a 25-21 victory.
Though FHU opened the fifth set with a kill, the Bulldogs took an early lead before Woz's block made it a 6-5 set. Once the squad swapped sides after Fisk took an 8-5 lead, the teams traded points until Fisk put three unanswered points on the board to win the set 15-9 and the match 3-2.
Audrey Orton led the way with a double-double with team-highs in both kills (13) and digs (15) while
Iza Wos was right behind her with 10 kills.
Avery Young pulled up 12 digs while
Autumn Howard had 11.
Alyssa Austin had a team-high 19 assists with
Becca Heineman chasing with 16.
