First match of road trip dropped

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Opening a Mid-South Conference journey, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions fell short in a 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 25-9) decision to the Campbellsville University Lady Tigers.

Freed-Hardeman (16-13, 2-7 MSC) began the first set strong enough, with kills from Audrey Orton and Hope Breen sandwiching a Marija Milic ace to forge ahead to a 6-1 lead. The hosts began to gather points while not allowing the Lady Lions a sustained attack until a kill tied the opening set 10-10. Breen had a kill to give FHU service to set up Avery Young to tally three consecutive service aces and gave FHU a 15-11 advantage. The Tigers would rally and score five of the final six points in the set to win the opener 25-22.

Campbellsville (19-12, 4-3 MSC) opened the second frame on a 6-2 run before the Lady Lions climbed back to a 10-8 deficit. The Lady Tigers then rattled off five unanswered points to take a 15-8 lead. The teams would battle back and forth the remainder of the set, but the early lead for C'Ville pushed them to a 25-20 set win.

Neither team could take a solid lead in the third set until Becca Heineman had a pair of service aces to give FHU a 12-7 lead. The Tigers would battle back to within one point as late at 19-18, but FHU ended the set with five unanswered points to force a fourth set.

The momentum from the third set could not be continued into the fourth with Campbellsville opening the set with  a 9-1 run. The Lady Lions were unable to recover from the early blow to fall in the set 25-9 and the match 3-1.

Audrey Orton and Avery Young led FHU's offense with 13 kills each. Autumn Howard led the back row with nine digs.
