HENDERSON -- Despite the fog rolling off of Highway 100 onto the Josh Riley Soccer Complex the Freed-Hardeman University Lions battled the Williams Baptist (Ark.) University Mustangs on Tuesday night. An early goal and defensive heroics saw FHU escape with a 1-0 victory.
The first shot for the Lions (10-2-1) was the most important of the match with
Tyler Burns streaking down the left side of the pitch before feeding
Thabo Mahlaha who netted his sixth goal of the campaign at 5:05. From there the Lions registered four more shots that were unable to find the mark. Meanwhile, CBC sent six shots toward the net with both on-goal being saved.
The majority of the second half was in favor of the Mustangs (1-5-1) with the Lions falling down to 10 men at 55:49. Central Baptist managed to fire nine shots in the second half with three being on target. Despite being down a man, the Lions had late chances when
Dantae Mcdonald and
Avery Flener both had an open field in front of them and the net, but the CBC keeper made outstanding saves to keep the score 1-0 until the final whistle.
