Women's basketball uses big second half to win 10th

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. — Finishing a home-and-away series, the No. 6 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions scored 39 points in the second half to defeat the Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) University Toppers 65-52 Monday afternoon.

The first five minutes of the game for the Lady Lions (10-0) was all about the Satterly sisters. After Rachel Satterly tallied back-to-back 3-pointers and free throws, it was Jenna Satterly's pair of free throws that gave FHU a 19-9 lead with 4:35 remaining in the first quarter. Lilly Kee, Ally Weathers, and Alaina Stiles made late layups, but three good 3-pointers from the hosts saw the quarter end with BMCU leading 20-19.

After combining for 39 points in the first quarter, neither the Lady Lions nor the Toppers (5-3) had success finding the hoop in the second frame with the teams combining for just 13 points. Elli Chumley's layup at 3:32 was the final score of the first half with the teams in a 26-26 stalemate.

FHU began to create separation in the third quarter by opening the second half scoring eight unanswered points: five from Kee. FHU's defense held the Toppers without a made field goal in the last 5:22 of the quarter while following that field goal with a 10-0 run of their own. Ally Weathers recorded back-to-back layups  before BMCU free throws made FHU's lead 46-38.

J. Satterly opened the final quarter with a 3-pointer before her jumper at 6:00 capped a run that ended with FHU leading 58-38. Jocy May added a late jumper before Julie Hampton's free throw in the final moments finalized the 65-52 Lady Lion victory.

The biggest stat differential came from FHU's depth, with the Lady Lion bench outscoring the Toppers' 27-5.

Ally Weathers went 7-8 from the floor to lead FHU's scoring with 14 points. Rachel Satterly followed with 13 points with Jenna Satterly collecting 12 points. Lilly Kee recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.
