Blistering start helps FHU to victory

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. — Competing for the first time in more than a week, the No. 6 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions showed no rust as they led by as many as 16 points in the first quarter before cruising to victory, 80-57, over the University of Pikeville (Ky.) Bears.

Lilly Kee opened the scoring for the Lady Lions (13-0) before Rachel Satterly tallied a 3-pointer to continue to push FHU's lead. Jenna Satterly and Ally Weathers then joined Kee to go on a 12-0 run with J. Satterly scoring five points in 20 seconds to give the Lady Lions an 18-2 lead. Late scoring by the Bears ended the first quarter with FHU leading 18-5.

Pikeville (7-7) began to climb back at the start of the second period, scoring the first four points of the frame. Brooklyn Crouch then sank a triple before a layup put the Lady Lions on top 23-9 with 6:04 left in the first half. After the Bears narrowed the FHU lead to single digits, the Lady Lions out-scored UPIKE 11-1 across the final four minutes of the half to take a 36-18 lead into the intermission.

Kee and Weathers connected for layups to make the lead 22, but Pikeville scored the next six points. For the next five minutes of the third quarter, the teams traded blows. An old-fashioned three-point play for Pikeville in the final second set the score at 54-39 after three quarters.

Any hope for a comeback was cut off by the Lady Lions' stellar free-throw shooting as they went 10-12 from the charity stripe in the final frame. Weathers would tally the final six points of the contest to claim the 80-57 victory.

The Lady Lions dominated at the glass, grabbing a season-high 51 total rebounds to the Bears' 30. FHU also connected for a season-high 15 free throws.

Lilly Kee was unstoppable on both sides of the floor, scoring 29 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to complete the double-double. Ally Weathers bucketed 17 points while Jenna Satterly connected for 16.
