HENDERSON — Despite having a better field goal percent, the No. 7 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions fell against the No. 6 University of the Cumberlands by a final score of 70-52.
The Lady Lions (23-4, 7-4 MSC) fell behind early after a set of buckets from the guests.
Kaylee Odom's layup at 9:03 put the Lady Lions on the board, but it was Kesey Bender's layup at 3:16 that opened a 6-0 run to knot the game 10-10. Late baskets from each team had the first quarter conclude with the Lady Lions trailing 13-12.
The second quarter was a big one for the Patriots (24-3, 10-1 MSC) with UC out-scoring 14-2 across the first five minutes of the game.
Jenna Satterly helped the cause with a 3-pointer, but the big frame pushed the score to 31-20 in favor of the Patriots.
The Lady Lions struggled with perimeter defense int he third quarter, giving up four 3-pointers in the frame.
Brooklyn Crouch won the quarter for the Lady Lions, scoring five points but still trailing 47-31.
Rachel Satterly hit four consecutive free throws to make the lead single digits; however, the Patriots made five straight triples to run away with the 70-52 victory.
FFHU had a better night from the floor, going 20-49 to shoot 41%, but the Patriots plastered the goal with 68 attempts while connecting for 25. From long range the Pats were 12-24 while FHU was 3-13.
Kaylee Odom and
Rachel Satterly led the FHU offense with 13 points each, followed by
Brooklyn Crouch's 11 points. Odom also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds while
Kelsey Bender had four assists.
