Baseball falls in slugfest

HENDERSON — The bats were alive in Saturday's doubleheader between the Freed-Hardeman Lions and the No. 9 University of the Cumberlands Patriots. There were five home runs in game one's 12-1 defeat before the teams combined for eight homers in game two's 16-12 loss.

The Lions (17-13, 0-2 MSC) fell behind early due to the Patriots' power, with UC tallying five long balls in the first game.

The Lions managed to escape the Cumberlands' (23-6, 5-0 MSC) shutout with a Brooks Jones single scoring a run.

FHU had five hits scattered among five hitters.

Evan Koob (0-2) tossed three full innings in the loss.

A wild final game of the series saw the Lions (17-14, 0-3 MSC) take an early lead thanks to a solo homer from Trace Anderson and later a two-run blast from Dalton Bonner.

The Patriots (24-6, 6-0 MSC) kept swinging a powerful bat, with the guests hitting four big flies in the game to help them score eight runs in the sixth inning. Though down by 10, the Lions kept fighting with Brooks Jones driving in a run before Drake Blackwood plated three with a double. Blackwood and McLemore would later hit homers, but no more runs would cross in the 16-12 loss.

The Lions tallied 18 hits led by Cade Fuller's 3-6 day from the dish. Trace Anderson, Drake Blackwood, Dalton Bonner, and Cam Madding each tallied two base hits.

Cooper Johnson (2-3) was charged with the loss despite striking out seven Patriots.
